Of course, some of the instructions will lead to far more debate than others. If you’re asking the learners to organise themselves chronologically, for example, then there is likely to be a clear right or wrong order. If, on the other hand, your instruction requires personal opinion then the task may require a significant amount of deliberation and you may need to give a time limit to support them in reaching a conclusion sometime this decade!

When the groups have organised themselves into their lines, it is time to encourage them to compare their order with that of the other groups. At this point, you get to be that little old lady because you can walk up and down the lines, asking learners to justify their own and their teammates’ positions.

The pure physicality of this activity can allow even abstract concepts to suddenly become clear. Rendering physical – tangible even – the sequencing or hierarchy of ideas can be a powerful demystifier when it comes to complex thinking and embedding learning into the memory. Furthermore, this type of ‘take a stand’ activity can inspire potentially apathetic or indifferent youngsters to actually have an opinion on an important topic and learn how to justify their views.
